Kevin Von Erich Early Career (1976-1981)
Kevin started his wrestling career in 1976 under the name Kevin Von Erich. He spent most of his career with his father’s promotion, World Class Championship Wrestling, and quickly became one of the biggest stars of the company.
His natural athletic ability and good looks made him stand out, and he achieved great success as a singles wrestler and in tag team competitions.
One of Kevin’s notable qualities was that he wrestled barefoot, which is highly unusual in a sport where almost all wrestlers wear high-topped boots. This earned him the nickname “The Barefoot Boy” from World-Class announcers.
In an interview, Kevin revealed that he never intended to wrestle barefoot, but before one of his matches, someone hid his boots as a joke, and he couldn’t find them. So, he went out to wrestle barefoot, and it became his trademark. Contrary to popular belief, he did wear boots in the early stages of his career, including his debut match against Paul Perschmann and a game against “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka.
Kevin was a big fan of Snuka, who also wrestled barefoot. He often performed a move similar to Snuka’s flying body splash from the top rope, which Snuka called the Superfly.
During the late 1970s, Kevin established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the Dallas territory. He had his first major success in 1978 while teaming up with his younger brother David. They won the NWA Texas Tag Team Championship twice and the NWA American Tag Team Championship.
On Christmas Day in 1978, Kevin solidified his position in the singles ranks by defeating Bruiser Brody for the NWA American Heavyweight Championship.
In 1980, Kevin made a one-time appearance in the WWF, facing Johnny Rodz and emerging victorious. As the 1980s began, Kevin became one of the biggest stars of the promotion and continued to win numerous championships in both singles and tag team competitions. He often teamed up with different partners, but his most notable partners were always his brothers Kerry and David.
As the early 1980s progressed, Kevin also appeared in other NWA-promoted territories, including St. Louis, Georgia Championship Wrestling, and briefly in Florida Championship Wrestling. He also competed in a few matches for the World Wrestling Federation.
Freebirds-Von Erich Feud (1982-1984)
One of the most memorable feuds in Kevin’s career was with the famous tag team, The Fabulous Freebirds. From 1982 to 1984, the two teams were involved in a heated rivalry that captivated audiences and left a lasting impact on the wrestling world.
The feud was marked by intense matches and dramatic storylines, making it one of the most iconic rivalries in wrestling history.
